About the Offshore Boat and Crew
The Gold Reserve is a 40 ft. custom built sport fisherman. She has twin turbo-charged
diesel engines, full sized tower, two running stations and is fully equipped with two sets
of electronics - radios, lorans & bottom machines. She is geared to the teeth with the
best top of the line tackle. She has three live bait wells capable of holding a thousand
or more live baits of various types. Remember you are fishing in Islamorada "Live
Bait Capital of the World" and this will make the difference between catching fish or
not and how many different kinds of fishing you can do in one day.
The crew is professional and courteous. They fish for a living twelve months a year and
put out 110% every trip, first to make sure you have an enjoyable time and second to load
the fish box!
About the Flats Boat
My flats boat is an 18 foot Hewes Red Fish with a 115 Yamaha.
It has everything you should need to get the job done right in comfort,
VHS, GPS, Polling platform, Live Wells, Trim tabs and is in excellent
shape.
Split Charters (Off-shore)
While in the Keys, if you want to go fishing, but it's not in your budget, consider a
split charter. The crew of the Gold Reserve will take the time to find other people who
wish to share the cost of the charter and get you out fishing at a more affordable price.
We have put together hundreds of charters like this and it is a nice way to make new
friends.
Family Package - evening trips 4:00 to 7:00 only $425.00
We go out 5 minutes from the dock and anchor the boat in six feet of
water. It is never rough, guaranteed, no seasickness. There is white sand
under the boat so you can see the sharks, stingrays, barracuda, and
tarpon swimming under the boat up to 300 hundred pounds. It is wild,
most nights you have three rods hooked up the whole time you are there.
No problem for kids, they can sit in the chairs and fight the fish.
We use light tackle so they have no problem. Up on the bridge Mom can
read a book and relax in the breezes and watch the sunset (sunset depends
on time of year). This is a great inexpensive trip and there is something
for everyone, whether you're an avid fisherman or it's your first time
out.
Swordfish Trips - available overnight fishing. Call or email
for information.
About the Captain
My name is Kevin Brown and I grew up in southern California.
I did a lot of fishing there growing up. I then traveled to the west
coast of Mexico for 3 years. I have spent the last 18 years fishing
in the Florida Keys. I have also fished in Hawaii, Bahamas, Costa Rica, Puerto
Rico, Turks and Cacaos etc., etc. The great thing about the Keys is
you can fish year-round for many different species of fish, it is unbelievable.
I guarantee you I will put 100% out for you and I will show up to the
boat in good shape. There are so many questions and answers about fishing
here that I can't put them all on paper. Please call me for info anytime between 7:00 a.m. and 9:00 p.m. at 305-394-0792 or email me at hotbite@bellsouth.net, I would be happy to answer all your questions and also if I talk to you I can do a better job at tailoring your trip to you and your needs.
Thank you,
Capt. Kevin Brown
Winter Fishing
We leave at 7:00 a.m. and head offshore to one of the bait patches that is producing that week, and cast net fresh live bait. Then we head offshore for the fishing grounds. In wintertime, we fish the edge of the reef 3 to 4 miles offshore. We do what we call slow trolling. The live baits are on top of the water, waiting to be engulfed by a Sailfish or Kingfish. We bump the boat in and out of gear. When the fish comes up, the bait usually will start to jump ... the action is about to begin! The reels are set in free spool, you pick up the rod, and let the fish eat. The captain will tell you when it's time to wind down and set the hook ... IT'S ON!! Hang on and wait until the fish tires and stops taking line. Some fish will nearly dump the reel and we will have to back down and chase them. You will also see Wahoo, Kingfish, Tuna, Dolphin (mahi-mahi), Cobia, Grouper, Snapper, and other species this time of year. This type of fishing is very personal. You have an 8-foot Sailfish right behind the boat! Five, 10, and sometimes whole pods of fish will be right behind the boat. It can get pretty wild in a hurry!
Summer Fishing
Dolphin time! This time of year we head offshore and fish anywhere from 10 to 30 miles out and will be looking for birds working over fish and/or debris floating in the water. We troll lures and rigged baits aboard the Gold Reserve and we will also have live bait for the more finicky fish. The Captain will get in the tower and chase them down to position the boat in front of them and then we will bait them up. The schoolie dolphin can be in schools of 10 to 200 fish at one time and will follow us while you hook them up. The bigger dolphin (slammers) are also in packs of 2 or more and we will also cast spinning tackle to get them and hook them up and then gaff them into the cooler. Summertime can also bring Wahoo and Tuna, and the occasional billfish.
About the Florida Keys
If you are coming to the Florida Keys and you want to really see
the Keys, the best way is to take a skiff out around the island and into
Florida Bay and back into the Everglades. You will be amazed at the natural
beauty of this place. Most people that come here miss this aspect of the
Keys; this is what the keys are truly all about. Fishing aside, just the
trip will be worth the price of the charter. Some things you might see: Sharks,
Manatees, Crocodiles, Sea Turtles, Dolphin and Stingrays. Bird enthusiasts
might also catch a glimpse of: Roseate Spoonbills, White Pelicans, Great
White Herons, Blue Herons, and Ospreys catching and eating fish plus there
are and many other species too numerous to list.
Fishing the Backcountry
Your options are:
1. Push the flats for bone fish and sharks.
2. Fish the channels and bridges
for tarpon.
3. Go back to Flamingo ( Florida Bay, Everglades) for trout, redfish.
snook, sharks and tarpon.
4. Weather permitting, big permit on the offshore
wrecks depending on the time of year and the tides we will decide what is
the best option for you and depending on length of trip, we are open to multiple
options.
