KEY WEST, Florida Keys - Two-time Grammy Award winner and internationally acclaimed singer-songwriter Jon Secada is to showcase his talents with a concert on Key West's Mallory Square during the island city's Cuban American Heritage Festival. Secada, an innovator who helped fuel Latin pop music's explosive surge in popularity, is to perform at 9 p.m. Saturday, June 22.
His debut album, "Jon Secada," was released in 1992 and sold more than 6 million copies worldwide. The Spanish-language version, "Otro Dia Mas Sin Verte," became the top Latin album of 1992 and earned Secada a Grammy Award for best Latin pop album.
Secada went on to top both the pop and Latin charts. His third album earned another Grammy for best Latin pop performance, and his career album sales have exceeded 20 million units worldwide. In addition, he has written and/or produced landmark songs for two of Latin pop's most celebrated stars, Jennifer Lopez and Ricky Martin.
According to Cuban American Heritage Festival director Chad Salinero, the festival's board selected Secada as its musical headliner both for his own accomplishments and his enduring overall impact on Latin music.
The Cuban American Heritage Festival, scheduled for Friday through Sunday, June 14 through 23, includes a "coast-to-coast" conga line, dinners and salsa parties, a symposium exploring various aspects of Cuban and Key West history, self-guided tours of the island city's Cuban Heritage Trail, theater presentations and book signings, a street fiesta, children's day, fishing tournament and a ceremony honoring Cuban patriot Jose Marti.
